MEASLES UPDATE
As you will no doubt be aware from media coverage Measles has been an unwelcome visitor to many areas of NZ this year. Unfortunately due to the high demand on limited vaccine supply we have had limited and at times no vaccines at our disposal. The Ministry of Health is working to secure further vaccine from overseas but their priority target area continues to be Auckland.
We have been instructed that our priority is to ensure that all our 15-month olds and 4-year olds are vaccinated on time.
In the last week one restriction that has been lifted is babies 6-11 months old who are travelling to Auckland may now be offered a vaccination. They will still require 2 MMR one at 15 months, one at 4 years of age.
If any children under 15 years of age do not have one documented MMR, we are now able to offer them vaccination.
Unfortunately, anyone over 15 is still not able to be offered a vaccination. We understand that this may be causing you some concerns. If you are immune compromised or in close contact with a confirmed case of measles, you should be vaccinated within 72 hours of first exposure to measles.
If you think you have measles please ring us - do not just turn up as we do not wish to have everyone in our waiting room potentially exposed to measles.
Please remember if you were born before JAN 1969 you will have been exposed to measles during your childhood as there was still wild measles in our community, so you are considered IMMUNE. If you are over 50 you DO NOT need to get vaccinated.
ZOSTAVAX (SHINGLES VACCINATION)
From April 1st, 2018 Zostavax (the Shingles Vaccine) has been FREE for those aged 65-80.
The Zostavax campaign for those who were aged 66-80 on April 1st 2018 ends on March 31st 2020 or when you turn 81 whichever comes first.
The Zostavax campaign will be over before the 2020 Influenza immunisation program begins so please do not wait to have this done. After March 31st you will NO longer be eligible for a free immunisation. I on or after 1st April 2018 there is no time limit to receive their funded Zostavax dose.
Everyone who wishes to have Zostavax is required to complete a screening questionnaire before being given the vaccine, to ensure it is in your best interests to receive it.
Zostavax can be given to patients over 50 but if you are not eligible for a free vaccine there is a cost of $250 which includes the nurse consultation. As with every vaccine you must wait 20 minutes after your vaccination to ensure you have no reaction .
MENACTRA/BEXSERO
We would encourage anyone heading off to University, (especially those entering first year and heading to halls of residence) , to consider getting vaccinated with Menactra and/or Bexsero.
Menactra covers meningococcal A C Y and W which were the cause of around 50 % of cases last year Menactra and Bexsero(MenzB vaccination) can be given at the same time to ensure maximum effect. You should consider having a course of Bexsero even if you have been vaccinated for MenzB previously .
If you are interested in having either or both of these vaccinations please ring and book on 2327193 for a nurse appointment. Please Ensure you tell the receptionist what vaccination you are coming for as we need to make sure we have current stock and may need to order it. Before you can receive
the vaccination your Doctor will review your records to ensure it is appropriate for it to be given .
The current price for Menactra is $155 and it is just a single dose.
Bexsero is a course of two vaccines regardless of prior MenzB vaccinations. The cost per dose is $170.
